Here I am in San Francisco - so good to be here again in this great opera city. I go back to the Adler days with so many memories of performances here, and auditions of course! Carol Vaness, Frederica von Stade, Maria Ewing, Nancy Gustafson, Sylvia MacNair, and so so many more, came to their youthful maturity in the great days of this company. And it seems to continue for I heard some terrific young singers, all Adler Fellows, yesterday afternoon. One now has an offer for next year in Chicago. More on that when the offer is accepted! And another one will be getting one for 2008........that is a long time ahead for COT but these days just the day after tomorrow in even a young singer's calendar.
And last night a spellbinding pair of performances from David Daniels and Cathrine Naglestad in Handel's Rodelinda - and this was a splendid production by David Alden. Handel always seems to bring out the best in this exceptional director. And the rest of the cast was top flight with Phyllis Pancella, Umberto Chiummo and Paul Nilon. And watch out Counter Tenors - there is another star coming in our direction all the way from Arkansas.
Later this morning Jake Heggie is presenting a new one-woman musical scene written for the opening on September 10 of new Ellie Caulkins Opera House, home of Opera Colorado in Denver. The librettist, Terrence McNally, was unable to be there so he will be hearing it for the first time today and we have been invited along.
And this evening we have a performance of Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri featuring COT favorite Jane Archibald.
