A revival of this very same double bill of Bluebeard(left) and Erwartung (below right) just opened in London at the Royal Opera House, where it had been a huge success several years ago. Longer ago, back in 1991, I tried to persuade Jeremy Isaacs and Paul Findlay (then respectively General Director and Opera Director of the Royal Opera House) of the merits of this pairing and in particular the production, by Robert Lepage, that I was planning for the Canadian Opera Company of which I was then General Director. They didn't get it! But BAM and the Edinburgh Festival did. And at the latter we won a huge prize as best music and best theater event of the Festival. This in competition with Peter Sellars, Robert Wilson and Peter Stein. Not bad?
It just received great reviews in the London papers (never easy to please). Read the one in the Times and then that in the Guardian. And when you have done that go to the COT website and sign up now for our production next season!
