The much rumored merger or "melding" of the Juilliard opera program with the Lindemann program at the Metropolitan Opera appears to have been announced - there is this piece in the NYT today which I read before leaving for the airport this morning. This all seems to me to be an excellent idea if a rather obvious one. Good for Peter Gelb and the authorities at Juilliard for making it happen - a great piece of diplomacy in the notoriously territorial world of academe. I have long been an advocate of close ties between teaching institutions and opera companies and in the United States its tough to break down the resistance at the schools. No names - they know who they are!
In this case the end result will likely be the most desirable finishing school possible for professional singers. And the aggressive internationalizing of recruitment will make it even better. This should be a thrilling program for those talented and lucky enough to be admitted.
