A favorite Chicago cheap and cheerful eatery, with branches nationwide, has closed. There are/were two on Michigan Avenue, one by the bus stop I use every afternoon, just around the corner from our offices and the Harris Theater, the other in the block north of Orchestra Hall.
It was in the latter that I heard Florida declared for Al Gore on election evening in 2000. I was having a quick snack before the CSO concert that evening. Well, as we were soon to find out, that was a false dawn. The rest is history. Lets hope for better things on November 4 this year.
Meanwhile, more seriously, on the other side of the world, in Bavaria, the Wagners continue to battle it out for the Bayreuth crown. This piece in London's Independent newspaper caught my eye and make a really good read! My one objection to it is that my friend Eva Wagner is described as elderly - hold on a bit!
There is a flourishing Wagner society here in Chicago and a gaggle of them are off to Bayreuth for the Ring towards the end of August. They may get more entertainment than they reckoned on.
