We were all delighted when Diane Paulus was appointed to the American Repertory Theater's Artistic directorship. Alas this means she has to give up some other things; her planned new production of La clemenza di Tito with COT next year is one of them. Never mind though folks - we are thrilled to have Christopher Alden (right) returning to Chicago and working with COT for the first time.
Christopher is one of those directors with a point of view and with a passionate commitment to and understanding of music and its supreme importance. Those of you who do not know his work will get the feel of it here in a 2006 interview.
Meanwhile I am now back at the beginning of another week in Chicago with lots of good stuff in store. We have a Development Committee meeting this evening - the last of our fiscal year. I had lunch today with a delightful visitor from Europe, an American stage director Lydia Steyer. She has been working with some interesting people - notably Calixto Bieito, and the new director of Berlin's Komische Oper, Australian director Barrie Kosky. I wonder if Chicago is ready for these people. We will find out if Bieito makes his rumored American debut next summer.
