I was greatly saddened to hear this afternoon that Julian Hope died this morning in London. He was a quiet self effacing man of great intelligence, perception and generosity of spirit - an outstanding assistant director and a talented director of his own shows. He first came to notice as director of Cavalli's La Rosinda in 1973 while a student at Oxford with Jane Glover who conducted this ground breaking revival of the Cavalli piece.
He was Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's assistant when JPP did his famous Falstaff production at Glyndebourne in 1976. Julian revived it on a number of occasions notably with Glyndebourne Touring Opera where he became a mentor to so many young singers. He will be greatly missed by his wide circle of friends who were devoted to him.
