The Student matinee of L'elisir at Lyric yesterday afternoon was a great occasion. Firstly for the enthusiasm of the 3,000 young people there - all behaving impeccably. How did that happen?
And secondly for a truly excellent and really enjoyable performance from the cast - Andriana Chuchman, René Barbera, Corey Crider and Sam Handley - performances that would grace any stage anywhere. The Ryan Center is doing a brilliant job in developing these well chosen singers. It is pleasure to watch them grow during the two to three years that they spend in Chicago. There is a particularly good crop just now.
I was late last night having been at the CSO concert. Odd program - seems to have been a substitute for something else that had been planned. There was an elegant performance of Schubert's Unfinished conducted by Robert Spano - and Jessica Rivera essayed the Copland Emily Dickinson songs as well as some particularly beautiful Schubert settings by Osvaldo Golijov - weird but lovely.
Less hectic day today.......
