I was at the Lyric Opera this afternoon for the "workshop" performance of La Cenerentola by some great Ryan Center singers. Of course they have a new intake in April each year and we were given the treat of Emily Fons in the title role. And it was unalloyed pleasure. She is going to be an attraction and a fixture here in for the next few seasons. René Barbera and Paul La Rosa were alternating servant and master - really excellent Ramiro and Dandini. And Paul Scholten a rather youthful but witty and accomplished Magnifico. There was a fuller house this afternoon than is usual for these events. And it was good to see so many nice old friends there. Intermissions are good!
I proceeded from there to the Harris Theater for a 30 minute session with the telemarketers who are doing a fund drive to wrap up our fiscal year. Chicago radio stations WBEZ (National Public Radio) and WFMT (classical music) are doing the same thing this week. 'Tis the season! So we discussed angles and heard some feedback from the "prospects" polled to date. Well a few additional thousand will be useful.........
And then at 6 pm to a meeting of our Opera Underground group - a gathering of mainly quite young (that means <45) enthusiastic friends of COT from all walks of life. United they will be by their enthusiasm for opera - and maybe also by their enthusiasm for each other. Don't get me wrong - this is not a dating agency. But you never can tell!! Anyway we hope that we will get somewhere with this. There were some extremely interesting new faces there. It could be fun.
And so home - we have to think about packing for our three week trip to England and Italy. Maybe tomorrow - I have had enough brain tuning for the day.
