I had a hugely enjoyable evening at Symphony Space yesterday evening. American Lyric Theater gave one of its periodic "readings" of new work - in this case of the three 50 minute pieces that comprise The Poe Project. Three hours of new stuff might be expected to be intimidating. But it was pure enjoyment, getting better and better as the evening proceeded.

Lawrence Edelson has assembled a brilliant group of singers, including a couple of former COT company members, Kevin Burdette and Chad Johnson, and one delightful young soprano, Jamie-Rose Guarrine, who is joining us in Spring 2011. In addition the no less excellent Caroline Worra, a complete knockout in the starring role in the third piece, Christopher Burchett and Sarah Heltzel made up a remarkably accomplished and well balanced cast.
The musical preparation by pianist Leesa Dahl and Conductor Keith Chambers was immaculate. This is important work - there was a full house and wild and well deserved applause. There is life in these things! The nest stage will be full productions - an interesting prospect or any enterprising opera company. I lke the size of the orchestra - 18.
I have a long day ahead - ending up no doubt watching the Mid Term Election results!
