We have a board meeting of Opera America in New York on Saturday, and committee meetings and other activities on Friday. So I am afraid I am off again tomorrow morning - assuming that the five inches of snow predicted overnight does not foul things up. But this is Chicago not London, so we should be OK!
We have just three of these meetings a year. They are great occasions for meeting colleagues, many of whom are old friends going back longer than one might wish to remember. I will be particularly pleased to see David Devan, recenly promoted to be General Director of the Opera Company of Philadelphia.
We were colleagues when I was General Director of the Canadian Opera company two decades ago. He was a most gifted marketing man then - and still is I have no doubt. But he has developed into an outstanding leader and has had a major impact on Philadelphia's opera company since he joined them as Executive Director some five years ago. He marked himself out as someone to watch during his time running Pacific Opera on Vancouver Island.
Our Chairman is Anthony Freud, formerly of the Welsh National Opera but now making a terrific job of running the Houston Grand Opera. And Marc Scorca, who years ago ran COT, has been President of Opera America for 20 years and has been transforming. The current strength and influence of Opera America is all down to him.
He has a wonderful staff who organise all the events impeccably. We will have a happy couple of days........
