It was just as well that I decided to take an extra day in Buenos Aires rather than have a day off in Mexico City. Otherwise I would not have been able to catch up on what I missed as a result of my convoluted journey here. So I heard the missing mezzo-soprano this evening and she is added to the list of finalists. She has, to our way of thinking, the exotic name Guadalupe Barrientos. She returned today from Montevideo where last night she had been singing Olga in Eugene Onegin. And of course, as is necessary with Olga, she is a real mezzo - lovely to hear the genuine article! She will be an exciting addition to the line up in October.
The other benefit of being here was to be able to present at Jutta's last Saturday of the month regular lunch date with her old colleagues at the Colón. There was the usual wonderful mix, including a former chorus member, the man in charge of hair, the principal flute.......all great characters and warm friends to Jutta who has kept them laughing for decades! We were of course at the Edelweiss - a place I have been coming to for 12 years close to the Colón as it is.
So I will be flying to Mexico tomorrow, a long way, two 5 hour flights first to Lima, Peru, and then a connection to another to Mexico City where I arrive at 7 pm.
I have to leave the hotel at 6 am so an early night now.
