A favorite thing to do when out of town visitors arrive in Chicago is to take one of the Chicago Archtecture Foundation's boat tours. I must have done this a dozen times in the last twelve years - always a good way for people to understand the special history of this city. And one gets a unique view of this city, a living museum of architecture. Above you see three of its great towers, side by side viewed from below on the river boat. To the left, one of the Marina City (1959-64) towers by Bertrand Goldberg. In the middle the IBM tower, Mies van der Rohe's last building in Chicago (1969). And on the right the Trump tower (completed 2009) by Adrian Smith when he was a partner at Skidmore, Owings, Merrill.
A rainy morning gave way to warmth and sunshine - this is one of the best ways to look at Chicago - not to be missed by anyone coming to Chicago for the first time........
