It is Gabriela Montero - a Venezuelan, yes another one! I was at her recital at the Wigmore Hall this evening, one of a summer late series, at 10 pm. And the house was full at this late hour. We had Brahms, the 3 Intermezzi Op117 and the Liszt B minor Sonata. Just 45 minutes music.
But it was then followed by her prowes in improvisation. There were two themes proposed by the audience - God save the Queen, and Für Elise. Pretty uninspiring ideas we must admit but wow! did she go for it!
I wonder what would happen if there were 10pm recitals at, for example, Fullerton Hall, in the Art Institute of Chicago. With their marketing power they could sell them out. They should try it. It is a very civilizing thought.......
I am off to Devon early tomorrow morning.
