The Castleton Festival Orchestra had its first shot at the Beethoven 9th Symphony yesterday morning, presided over by the magic baton of Lorin Maazel.
He was in a benign mood most of the time and his long experience and serious no nonsense approach ensured that this was a masterclass for these young musicians. We shall see how the preparation of this symphony unfolds over the days - the concert is on Saturday at 2pm.
And now for something completely different - yesterday evening there was a concert in the theater of a variety of music to which I have never been exposed. This included a good hour from The Seldom Scene. The house was packed and these, in some cases pretty ancient, guys were a revelation - amazing. And the evening ended with Fireworks! Happy July 4 everybody.
