I am in Sussex for two days, staying one night with an old friend who announced at breakfast that she has known me since I was 16! Well that is true - she was a friend and colleague of my elder sister, as well as having worked at Glyndebourne herself for many years. It is nice to meet people at my age who knew and were fond of my parents. It was a great treat to see her - and to wake up in the little guest room with this nice view over the town of Lewes towards the Downs.
It was good to see the Ravel Double Bill of L'heure espagnole and L'enfant et les sortilèges last night. It was last seen there in the new production by Frank Corsaro and Maurice Sendak in 1987. L'heure had previously been seen at Glyndebourne in a production designed by Osbert Lancaster in 1966. So I was somewhat transported back.
I will have more observations later about these performances, and the Figaro that I will see this evening. I now have to dress up for the party - black tie is "recommended". In fact you feel rather foolish if you are not wearing one.......
