Parsons Green, London 11.55 am Sunday January 21 2013
It has been gently tumbling down all day. This has caused chaos at the hopelessly challenged London Airport. And I have to fly to Porto tomorrow - but from Gatwick where I hope they may be more prepared......
So I was in pretty well all day, with a lunch guest whom I treated to roast lamb. I think that he had not had such a good old fashioned English Sunday lunch since his childhood days. Well he is younger than me, but not much!
This evening I went up to Kings Place as promised, indominatable as ever! And it was a real pleasure to hear the very fine Angell Trio playing Haydn, Martinů, and Brahms trios. This was an early evening, 6:30 pm, event - and we were out of there by 8:15. Perfect.
This is a group of outstanding musicians who seem to be perfectly matched, and so produce strong and forthright performances, with strong personality but without ego. So these three very different composers were well served, and so were we, a small band who braved the weather to enjoy what turned out to be a tremendously worthwhile evening of music making.
London is a problem. There is just too much good stuff on for one to see and hear everything. The quality of the work one can enjoy in the smaller performance spaces such as Kings Place often puts their larger brethren to shame. So it really pays to look around for those golden nuggets such as this.
