The Metropolitan Line platforms Baker Street station January 11 1863
The great London underground was 150 years old yesterday. I had a meeting at the Royal Academy of Music at noon today and made my way from home to Baker Street station, just yards from the RAM. I thought it remarkable how the original platforms on the first line, the Metropolitan Line, to come into service on January 10 1863, are essentially unchanged.......you can see that for yourself from these photos I took this morning. That old bench above may not be the original one but it is seriously old. It seems not to have been self consciously preserved - it was just very well made and was durable and remains serviceable. Believe me - I sat on it!
So that is just one of the many curiosities of living in London - pleasure around every corner!
