I arrived here this afternoon after a somewhat anxious journey from home to Gatwick Airport. The trains turned out to be the problem, not the planes. So I arrived here bang on time. I took the really splendid Metro in from the airport - real state of the art mass transit, built ten years ago in the good days.......
What a wonderful city Porto is. I have only been here once before - in 2005 - when we had Neue Stimmen auditions here to mark the opening of Rem Koolhaas' Casa di Musica which I look forward to revisiting tomorrow.
But the real magic of the place is the old town - and for us English the resonating names of the great Port houses! The eagle eyed of you will have fun picking them out from the picture below - the view at 4pm this afternoon from the window of Anthony and Camilla Whitworth-Jonest' beautiful little house here. Anthony had a very succcessful spell at the Casa da Musica before leaving to take on Garsington. They fell in love with this place and return often of course. More in the nest two days. I will sample the restaurant across the street this evening - but not until probably well after 8 this being the Iberian peninsula.
