On the beach Aldeburgh - 10:30 am January 2 2013
Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk on St Caecilia's Day 1913. It has been a huge treat to have been here this New Year in his home county, and in the town which he loved - Aldeburgh. It is indeed a place of pilgrimage, like Salzburg. It has its magic which is profoundly moving to all who have been affected by his music so much of which has been inspired by this place. So a walk around town this morning was just the thing to mark the beginning of this centenary year of one of he greatest of all opera composers. It is a divine coincidence that this is celebrated the year of the bicentenaries of Wagner's and Verdi's births in 1813.
The Moot Hall Aldeburgh
Aldeburgh is a completely delightful place. Yesterday the crowds were horrible - this morning the place was deserted. A 45 minute contemplative walk through this small town this morning was peaceful and somewhat therapeutic. It was pretty perfect on this chilly January morning........
