I had an uneventful journey yesterday - a comfortable flight by BA only ten minutes late. And I made it to the Dress rehearsal of Tito Act 2. The opera house is 30 yards from my hotel. More than that I would not have managed - it is COLD! But actually, and oddly, no snow......it was and remains forecast.
What a treat it is to be here. Peter Sellars is still in town, as is his wont, even though the Tristan opened on Tuesday. We go back a very long way (30 years?) so this was a nice reunion. He is eternally youthful, excited and enquiring about everything of actual or potential interest. I will see the Tristan this afternoon.
The whole COT Tito team is here of course, led by Christopher Alden, so we got together after the rehearsal in spite of my need for sleep. But the Tito was so stimulating that I could stayed up all night! I will reserve my comments until I see the full show on its opening tomorrow afternoon. But I am sure that I will be very proud that we created this production in Chicago in 2009. It gave me a nice little jolt as I came into the theater at 9 pm yesterday evening, as the second act began, and I saw this familiar thing on stage! And there is some stunning singing........
