Salzburg born Gustav Kuhn has lived in Erl for some thirty years. His busy international schedule has taken him all over the world but his heart is here in Erl. And in 1998 he founded the Tirol Festival, using the building built for the Passion Plays, which had been seen here since the 17th century, as a performance space for the ambitious program of productions that has been produced annually since then.
And six month ago the new Festpielhaus opened, yet another miracle for this small Tirol village. With reputedly the largest orchestra pit in the world, bigger than the Met......and extraordianary acoustics and just 650 or so seats it a dream space for the performance of opera. And tomorrow morning I will see and hear how it fares as a concert hall as well.
But for now I am off to an orchestral dress rehearsal of Il trovatore, the second of the Verdi operas being produced in this Verdi's bicentenrary year. More later!
