We are mourning Gerard who died yesterday evening after a quite long illness. He was a giant of the opera, music, theatre, and dance world. And he was a friend and colleague to us all, in my case for 40 years.
We first met when he was Artistic Administrator of the Hamburg Opera. He then went to Brussels, to Salzburg, to the Ruhr Triennale, to Paris, and finally to Madrid. And in each of these places he left a huge mark, and his passing leaves an enormous gap.
He was a man of brilliant intellect, of considerable personal charm and humour; he discerned the best, he demanded the best, he was completely uncompromising in getting it. He was decisive and determined to ensure the greatest degree of excellence. He suffered no fools, of which there are many. We will not see his like for many a year..........
