I am in Berlin with my visit overshadowed by the news as I landed that my dearest of friends had passed away just an hour before..........
For now the news is best summed up by his son Gus who has written as follows to all Glyndebourne friends:
Sir George Christie, 1934 - 2014
My father passed away peacefully this morning after a hard fought illness. He will be remembered as a visionary leader and a great champion of the arts in this country. His achievements were immense and his friendship cherished by many, not least by those lucky enough to have worked with him directly.
As a family we listened to the first act of Der Rosenkavalier from the 1965 Glyndebourne recording last night with him. He has been Glyndebourne's guiding spirit throughout its history and we will dedicate this Festival to him.
There will be much more to be said and written about this remarkable and greatly loved man. The 52 years of my career have been blessed by his friendship thoughout. And I am just one of many hundreds whose lives have been formed by his wise and firm counsel, and inspired by his passionate commitment to the ideals of his parents who created Glyndebourne.
