I took this photo of John Adams when he was with us in Chicago to conduct A Flowering Tree in 2009. And it was great to see him as ebullient as ever on the podium with the LSO with El Niño on Sunday evening. He is undiminished as he approaches his 70th birthday - his boyish energy and enthusiasm as infectious as ever!
It was a bit of a COT evening actually - Jennifer Johnson Cano was the stunning mezzo soloist. She had been Kate Julien in our Owen Wingrave in 2009 - and also did a semi-staged version of Frauenliebe und Leben the following year. And the soprano soloist was Joélle Harvey who had been in our co-production of Death and the Powers in 2011.
It was so good to see all these dear people after what turned out to be a hit performance of El Niño.
I have been non stop busy all week, and there is a huge family birthday party this evening. I am off to New York tomorrow at dawn for a couple of days - back on Saturday evening.....no peace! But no complaints either!
