Yesterday was long and profitable even if there were "only" 35 singers! There was something for everyone with possible qualifiers in all four main voice categories. Tenors are always welcome being as they are so rare, and the odd additional soprano is also a good thing although pretty dangerous to commit to at this early stage of the game. But whatever the final outcome, it was an encouraging day with clear evidence of fine teaching here in Shanghai.
The downside was the fact that our venue has moved from central Shanghai to East China Normal University's Minhang campus which took 75 minutes to get to yesterday morning, and 90 minutes back to the city at 6 pm. But it was worth it - and rewarded with an excellent Cantonese menu for dinner!
There has been no time at all on this trip for any recreation - and no days off in prospect. I am now waiting for my flight to Beijing where I should arrive around 2pm today - Wednesday I think! I am looking forward to being back in the extremely comfortable Opposite House which is part of the Swire Group - old friends of ours at Glyndebourne!
