We are living in troubled, troubling, troublesome times. The corruption and venality in the UK which it seems that only the blessed St Vincent de Cable had the guts to stand up and speak about in advance; the ludicrous vain posturing of the United States Congress and Senate over a seriously dangerous issue which individually they appear not to understand; and the Philistine approach by the Dallas Opera to their financial problems which I wrote about yesterday......let's not even go near Norway - way too sad. Am I depressed? Yes, it is altogether brutal out there.
But there is a solution!! Prima la musica!
Let us all move away from these preoccupations and get back to what we really believe in , what really matters. And you do not have to be a musician to get it.
I had the surprising treat today to find my favorite photo site's President, CEO, Lord High everything, Mike Johnson, writing on the topic - off topic for him but totally on topic for us. His website, The Online Photographer, has its world headquarters in the great city of Waukesha, Wisconsin - also home to the Wisconsin district of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions.......so you get the connection?!
So corraggio! - tutti amici miei - all is not lost. We will in the end prevail.....
Tomorrow I am off on my travels again - to Buenos Aires and then back via Mexico City. Argentina has been very strong, The Neue Stinmmen winners in 2003 and 2005 were from Buenos Aires; and the second placed prize winner from 2007 also. So my expectations this week are considerable. We have five places available for singers from Argentina and Mexico. Previous form would indicate that we should get them filled.
I am excited at the prospect of being back at the Teatro Colón on Thursday. The theatre had been closed for renovations for our last two competitions. But now we are going home - and how nostalgic it will be to be back at the Zum Edelweiss restaurant - I guess this is what it was like in Buenos Aires in the 1950s. Its a stone's throw from the opera house........we have moved on, but we can still look back!
I hope that the blog may be richly illustrated in the coming days as I pass from Argentina through to Mexico City. I will be back in Chicago already on Tuesday evening August 2. Meanwhile log in here for the latest news.
