We were in the Staatsoper's Orchestra rehearsal room again. This great old theater you see above in all its considerable glory.
Yes, we had another 40 + today. But there are compensations sometimes - late this afternoon I knew that these two days were not in vain because all this waiting was rewarded by the appearance, out of the blue, of a talent blessed by some unknown force - this was a 22 year old with out of this world responses and instincts and no one can know where they came from. It was worth the wait. She will go to the finals in Guetersloh and she may fail or flower. We shall see. This is a young woman from a war torn miserable part of the world who has risen from what must have been appalling circumstances to be capable of communicating all human emotion through music. As you may imagine I was bowled over! I could have listened to her all afternoon - no time. No problem, we will hear more in October.
But you may imagine that I have had it for today. I have been doing the analysis of the last two weeks since 6pm - and I am not finished yet and its now 11. Well, I did go out for dinner. To a place just by Check Point Charlie where I crossed into East Berlin for the first time in 1966. Its just a nostalgic footnote now. It was a nasty sinister spot then. Nice restaurant, Italian - Sale e Tabacchi, on Kochstrasse. No website that I can find but I continue to try to recommend good places for you!
I am off tomorrow to Munich but its a travel day only - a welcome respite, particularly considering that I then have 5 straight days closeted with singers. Lets hope that there are more remarkable people.
can we know where is this mysterious girl from that impressed you so much?
and do you think that what she might of gone threw in her country made her singing more emotional and shining?
