Paris - City of Light
The Philharmonia's City of Light series - Paris 1900-1950 - kicked off on Thursday with an absorbing concert performance of Pelléas et Mélisande - and the full house was captured for three hours in another world......
I will not go on about the effect that this work has on me and many others. Suffice to say that there was a remarkable Golaud from Laurent Naouri, and the Pelléas of Stephane Degout and Melisande of Sandrine Piau completely captured these elusive spirits.
And Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia added to their already considerable laurels and credentials in this wonderful repertoire.........
And this weekend we have mixed, but occasional and welcome, light if not of Parisian magic.
Nevertheless Battersea Park revealed many beauties yesterday afternoon when I went out for a long walk. And I hope to be out again this Sunday afternoon as I see now, after lunch, that the sun is modestly emerging, lifting its veil.......
